Our KS3 Science resources draw on Forestry England's expertise in forest management to inspire your students. You'll find lesson plans, fieldwork activities, citizen science projects and data to analyse.
Climate change introduction
This introduction to climate change and forestry is a great starting point and sets the scene for the lesson plans.
Pests and diseases
In this KS3 Biology lesson plan your students will learn:
- about biosecurity.
- how organisms affect and are affected by their environment.
- how climate change has impacted the spread of pests and diseases.
- what is being done to increase the resilience to climate change threats.
They will also take part in a citizen science project and use the film clips and ID sheets to identify pests and diseases on trees in their local area.
Cutting carbon emissions
In this KS3 Chemistry lesson your students will:
- find out about the production of carbon dioxide by human activity and the impact on climate.
- calculate how much carbon is being stored in the trees on your school grounds.
- discover what Forestry England are doing to reduce our carbon emissions and investigate what your school can do.
Calculating tree growth
This lesson plan will get your students working scientifically and and learning about photosynthesis as they record the growth of trees over time.
Analysing real data from our colleagues at Forest Research will enable students to see the application of this method for scientific purposes.
