Hagg Wood Forest Plan
About the forest plan
Hagg Wood Forest Plan covers 81 hectares near Dunnington, York. It includes Hagg Wood (43.3 ha), Scoreby Wood (33.2 ha), and Cottage Plantation (4.2 ha). The surrounding landscape is mainly arable farmland.
Hagg Wood is a mix of broadleaf (33%) and conifer species (64%), primarily Scots pine, larch, and oak. Much of the woodland is classified as a Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS), with restoration efforts ongoing.
Objectives
All management follows the UK Forestry Standard and UK Woodland Assurance Standard. The plan prioritises:
- Biodiversity: Enhancing PAWS restoration, increasing species diversity and structural diversity of the forest, and supporting priority wildlife species.
- Climate Resilience: Diversifying tree species to adapt to climate change and build resilience against tree diseases.
- Sustainable Timber Production: Using Lower Impact Silvicultural Systems (LISS) to maintain sustainable timber production.
- Community & Recreation: Supporting public access and engagement.
What we'll do
The current plan outlines management proposals including felling and restocking over several decades, with felling approved until 2035.
There are no planned clearfells at Hagg Wood, with all felling taking place in Low Impact Silvicultural Systems. The plan aims to increase broadleaf woodland cover to over 80% by 2054, creating a more resilient and ecologically valuable forest.
Conifer | Broadleaf | |
Felling | 0 | 0 |
Lower Impact Silvicultural Systems regeneration felling | 15.6 | 8.7 |

Monitoring and review
Forest management will be reviewed in 2030 and 2035 to assess progress against our objectives.
