Forestry England are creating a new ‘Coronation Wood’ to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. The new woodland at Lower Lye will cover 21 hectares and connect with Bucknell Wood, a 225-hectare woodland which we already manage at Bucknell in Shropshire. The woodland will be open for informal public access for local people to enjoy alongside being a thriving home for wildlife and sustainably-grown timber. The new woodland is an important part of the work that we're doing to expand the nation’s forests, and will be created through the Nature for Climate Fund.
Work in progress
In summer 2024 we shared draft designs for the new woodland and invited feedback from local people. This feedback can be viewed here.
Our designs include a mix of tree species which will flourish in the specific soil and climate conditions of this site.
We're also looking carefully at the many benefits this woodland will create, including boosting biodiversity and helping nature recovery across the wider landscape.
As of February 2025, fencing and tree planting is underway and we'll continue managing the new woodland as these young trees grow.
