Horse riding at Whinlatter

Horse riding at Whinlatter

Whilst there are no waymarked horse riding routes, horse riders are welcome to explore our network of forest roads.

A new 10km waymarked cycling route, the Gorse trail, uses mostly forest roads with a small section of mountain bike trail.  This could be adapted for horse riders with a small detour to avoid the mountain bike trail.  Please contact the Visitor Centre for advice.

There is also one bridleway in the forest which goes from Thornthwaite to Whinlatter and vice versa.

Please contact the Visitor Centre for guidance and advice on access and routes at whinlatter@forestryengland.uk or on 017687 78469. Always check the website or contact us ahead of your visit for potential closures.

For more information on our facilities, opening times and contact details, please see our visitor information.

The forest road follows graveled surfaces. Some limited sections of the bridleway are very steep in places.
Parking
Parking with a horse box is easier at the outlying car parks at Revelin Moss and Hobcarton. The network of forest roads can be accessed from here, as well as the Main Visitor Centre car park and Spout Force car park. You'll need to ride around gates.
