Charcoal making
Event details
-
Events at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum
- The Coppice Compound
Over the course of two days participants will learn to make charcoal in a variety of methods.
Learn how to read the smoke and adjust the kilns depending on the wind and weather. Everything from species selection, preparing the wood, stacking and burning the kilns and unloading will be covered. A more modern retort kiln will run along side the traditional ring kiln. For those that want to make charcoal of their own at home, but don’t have existing equipment, participants will also learn how to make charcoal in an oil drum.
At the end of the course participants will not only leave with the skills to make their own charcoal, but with some of the highest quality charcoal from Westonbirt’s very own woodlands.
