Oak gate making
Event details
-
Events at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum
- The Coppice Compound
Over the duration of the course you will learn the art of cleaving (splitting) oak.
The group will start with a large log which will then be riven into the component parts. This process involves using large wooden mallets, wedges and axes - this section of the course is quite physically demanding so an element of physical fitness is required (though help is always available if needed). From here you’ll then further shape the wood using draw knives and shave horses. Mortice and tenon joints will then be made using traditional techniques and devices. Further riving will then be required to add braces and decorative palings to the gates.
At the end of the course you will leave with a beautiful oak gate that will last a lifetime!
